Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Glaucoma and Diabetes: Where a Supplement Stops
People search for supplements by condition for a good reason. They have been told something about their eyes and want to act. We understand that. We also have to be straight with you. A dietary supplement is not a treatment for any of the conditions below. This page explains what the research did and did not test, and where the doctor's part begins.
No. Visivra is a dietary supplement. It does not treat or prevent macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma or diabetic eye disease, and it does not restore lost sight. A diagnosed condition belongs with an eye doctor, who can say whether any supplement has a place in your plan.
- Visivra is not a drug and is not FDA approved. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
- AREDS2 enrolled people who already had intermediate AMD, or the advanced form in one eye, and measured progression to late disease.
- Visivra is not an AREDS2 formula and does not inherit its findings. The label prints no amounts.
- Sudden vision changes, new floaters, flashes or eye pain need same-day care.
- With diabetes, glaucoma or a family history of eye disease, keep your scheduled dilated eye exams first.
- Visivra is for healthy adults 18 and over. Nothing on this website is addressed to children, and nothing is published for pets.

Can a supplement treat macular degeneration?
No. A supplement does not treat macular degeneration, and this website does not suggest it does. The condition is followed at an eye clinic with instruments. The National Eye Institute page on age-related macular degeneration describes what it is and how it is assessed.
Confusion comes from one famous trial. AREDS2 tested a specific formula in people who already had intermediate AMD, or the advanced form in one eye. It measured progression to late disease over five years. That is secondary prevention, meaning slowing something already present. It did not show that healthy eyes see more sharply. It did not show that a supplement stops the disease from starting. It is also not a trial of any product on a shop shelf today.
The 2023 Cochrane review covers what antioxidant supplements do and do not do for people who already have the disease. The Cochrane review on prevention asks the separate question of whether supplements stop it starting, and its answer is weaker. Read both before you take any headline at face value.
Do macular supplements work, and is Visivra one of them?
| The question | What the evidence covers | Does it describe Visivra? |
|---|---|---|
| Does a formula slow existing AMD? | AREDS2, in a defined group, at defined amounts | No. Visivra is not that formula, and its amounts are unpublished. |
| Does a supplement prevent AMD? | A weaker body of evidence | No claim is made. |
| Does it help healthy eyes see better? | CREST and contrast-sensitivity trials, at 10 mg lutein | Not directly. No trial of the capsule exists. |
| Does it restore lost sight? | Nothing | No. |
The amounts in the trials belong to the trials. The label names lutein and zeaxanthin and prints no figure.
So the honest answer to do macular supplements work is: it depends which question you mean, for which people, at which amounts. For Visivra specifically, nobody can say, because no trial has been run on the finished capsule. For the detail on the ingredient list see our AREDS comparison.

What about cataracts and glaucoma?
Cataract is the commonest cause of glare at night that has been worsening for months. It is dealt with by an eye examination. The AREDS cataract arm is the trial that looked at whether supplementation changes the course of cataract. We do not summarise its result here, and we do not claim that Visivra changes it. Ask your eye doctor what it means for you.
Nothing on this website says a supplement affects glaucoma. Raised pressure is one of the things an eye examination finds, and a capsule does not touch it. If you have glaucoma, keep every scheduled exam, and tell your clinician what supplements you take.
What about diabetes and floaters?
None of the six named ingredients is a blood-sugar ingredient, and nothing here is a treatment for diabetes. Retinal changes in diabetes are followed at the clinic, not at home. If you have diabetes, keep your dilated eye exams and let your clinician know what you take.
Floaters need a careful line. A shower of new floaters, flashing lights or a curtain across part of the vision is a same-day matter for an eye casualty department. No capsule is an answer to it. Old, steady floaters are a different thing, and an eye doctor can tell you which you have.
When should you book an appointment instead?
| What you notice | What it points to | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Part of your vision lost, or a curtain over it | An urgent matter | Same-day eye care. |
| A shower of new floaters or flashes | An urgent matter | Same-day eye care. |
| Straight lines that look bent or wavy | The classic reason to examine the macula | Book an exam soon. |
| Glare at night, worsening for months | Cataract is the commonest cause | Book an exam. |
| Gradual blur at near in your forties | Presbyopia, an optical problem | Book an exam. Glasses are the answer. |
| Eye pain or redness that does not settle | An examination matter | See an eye doctor. |
These are general pointers, not a diagnosis. Your own clinician decides.
What about children and pets?
Visivra is sold for healthy adults aged 18 and over. No page here speaks to younger readers. The 2025 astaxanthin trial did enrol children, but that trial gave a stated amount of one ingredient. A capsule for adults is not that trial, and the label here prints no astaxanthin amount.
Pets are not covered. Searches for dog vision supplements are common. Nothing in the seller's paperwork describes a veterinary use, and we hold no facts about it. Please ask your vet. Do not give a human capsule to an animal.
What should you ask your eye doctor about supplements?
- Do I have a condition where a specific formula is recommended, and at what amounts?
- Would the six named actives in Visivra duplicate anything I already take?
- Should I avoid vitamin A or zinc supplements given my history or medicines?
- How often do I need dilated exams, and what should I report in between?
Take the Visivra label with you. Your clinician can tell you in a minute what we cannot tell you at all.

Frequently asked questions
Can Visivra treat macular degeneration?
No. It is a dietary supplement, not a drug. It is not FDA approved and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, including macular degeneration, cataract and glaucoma.
Is Visivra an AREDS2 supplement?
No, and we will not call it one. AREDS2 is a specific combination at specific amounts tested in people who already had intermediate AMD. Two of its ingredients appear here by name, which is not the same as matching the formula.
Is there a Visivra for cataracts or glaucoma?
No. The label prints four general supports and no disease claim. Cataract and glaucoma are found and managed at an eye examination.
Is Visivra suitable for diabetics?
None of the six ingredients is a blood-sugar ingredient and nothing here treats diabetes. Retinal changes in diabetes are followed at the clinic. Tell your clinician what supplements you take.
Can I give Visivra to my child or my dog?
No. It is sold for healthy adults 18 and over, and nothing is published for pets. Ask a doctor for a child and a vet for an animal.
What should I do about new floaters?
New floaters, flashes or a curtain across the vision need same-day eye care. A supplement is not an answer to those symptoms.
Our view
Wanting a pill for a worrying diagnosis is human. We would rather say the plain thing. The conditions in this article are found and followed by eye doctors with instruments, and a capsule is not part of that process on its own.
If you are healthy, want daily carotenoid support and have an up-to-date eye exam, a supplement may be a reasonable personal choice. If you have a condition, the plan belongs to your clinician. Bring the label and ask.
Visivra is a dietary supplement. It is not FDA approved, and no supplement is. Lost sight is not something it brings back.
